In this presentation, I will explore the psychological consequences of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, beginning with a brief introduction of myself and a mention of my co-facilitator, Mutuyemariya Uwujuje Rachel. I will define key concepts and discuss how primary, vicarious, and transgenerational trauma continue to impact individuals and communities. Drawing from my work with the Mental Health Dignity Foundation (MHDF), I will discuss the prevalence of mental disorders among our clients, the therapeutic approaches we use—including individual, couple, family, group, and emergency interventions—and the projects we have implemented. I will also share success stories and reflect on the challenges we face in the field, emphasizing the importance of trauma-informed care in Rwanda’s ongoing healing process.
